Hello, I'm Taru
Welcome to my website
About me
My name is Taru and I am a 22-year-old student from Joensuu, Finland. I study biology at the University of Eastern Finland and I am in my first year of Master's degree. My minor studies are biochemistry and human biology and my specialized studies are molecular biology and biochemistry.
My goal is to become a researcher. I want to take part in developing new therapeutic methods and medicines for different types of health conditions and diseases.
I have the ability to hyper focus meaning I can pay attention on the things I am most interested in. I have great problem solving skills due to the experience in laboratory. My curious personality makes me a motivated and enthusiastic student and worker who coworkers and supervisors can trust. Having worked in many different kinds of companies have prepared me to work in various environments and situations. I am careful but flexible, and I prefer working in a calm environment where I can fully concentrate on my work.

education
Cell culture:
This practical course gave me the general ideas about practical skills in cell/tissue culture, detection of cell culture contaminants, transfection, designing primers and reporting the results
Methods in molecular biology:
The course gave me knowledge and skills of molecular biology techniques to clone and express ectopic genes in bacteria and eukaryotic cells and to investigate the regulation of genes, expression of RNA and its processing and reporting the results
Cell culture plates
GFP chemiluminescence
Biochemistry of proteins:
In this practical course I learned the extraction of proteins from biological material, quantification and characterization of proteins, measuring enzyme activities, production of recombinant proteins and reporting the results
Bioinformatics:
This course taught me the main methods used in bioinformatics analysis, the most important biological databases and database searches, the basic principles of sequence searches, analyses and sequence comparisons and the basic genome-wide sequencing-based methods (ChIP-seq, RNA-seq) and when these methods should be applied

Erasmus+ exchange
On September 6th 2022 I moved to Aveiro, Portugal for the autumn semester. I started my master's studies in Aveiro studying
Molecular Medicine (molecular basis of diseases and on latest techniques and therapeutic approaches in molecular medicine),
Neurobiology (for example, the organization and structure of the nervous system, molecular basis of neurotransmission and neurodegenerative diseases),
RNA biology (the cellular roles of RNAs and their relevance for the origin and evolution of life),
Experimental Planning and Biological Data Analysis (the theoretical background of experimental design and data analysis, the practical use of software involved in the analysis of multivariate biological data),
and A1 level of Portuguese.
During my exchange I got to practice my English skills, I got new friends around Europe and I got the chance to travel. I learned a lot about different cultures, teaching methods, and I gained more skills to work with a group.
